‘an ode to CTRL: the [alt]ternative’ is a collection of response poems to R&B artist, SZA’s debut album ‘CTRL’ released in June 2017. Though SZA is well familiarized in the music industry, including singing with Rihanna on ‘Consideration’ and writing over 200 songs herself, CTRL took the cake when it was released. SZA translates a opulent, raw, and personal sense of style on this album, making it easy to relate to not only myself but millions of millennials. SZA’s honey-tuned voice coupled with her transparency is one of the many characteristics that many of her fans admire. This album was nothing short of a fire-starting inspiration for me. As a result, in this short book, I have also translated what CTRL means to me. Besides this literally being the top album played in my car and on my phone for the past three months, every single song has been a revelation. This album made me own ALL of my shit-- all of my messiness, my downfalls, my sexiness, my insecurities… SZA magically put these words together to help me glorify, own, + put my name on EVERY ounce of MY shit. It was a humble destruction. It was the birth of new beginnings. It was never “just” an album. It was and is my soul spoken in a language I can finally understand. By defining what CTRL meant for me, made it easier for me to understand, accept, and let go..
